Perspective Is The Key To Travel in 2021

Amina Dearmon, Owner of Perspectives Travel

This time last year, I was returning from an inspiring vacation in San Miguel de Allende with 17 friends, new and old. A few Januarys prior, I was booking a trip to Iceland for May. Right now, I am sitting in my office wondering just how far I can go, safely. With all the unknown, I reached out to our local expert, Amina Dearmon, Owner of Perspectives Travel, an affiliate of Virtuoso and SmartfFlyer, for the latest information on places that I should consider traveling to in 2021. Read on for advice about what destinations to consider and why working with a travel advisor has never been more important

Where to begin. We all want to go somewhere this year, but figuring out where to go can sometimes be the hardest part. In 2021, all of the classic elements of what I do—researching destinations, reaching out to my hotelier partners to ensure your VIP treatment, and finding you the most authentic experiences—will still be the foundation of creating a unique vacation for you. But my role as a travel advisor will also be integral to your understanding of what destinations are open, how to best prepare to travel to them, and what to expect when you arrive and return home. Since regulations are changing daily, and even some domestic travel involves quarantining, I am advising people to choose a staycation, nearcation, or an island getaway.

Poolside bar at The Chloe in New Orleans, LA

Luxury close to home. In New Orleans, The Chloe is a newly opened boutique hotel. With just 14 rooms, thoughtful details and charming accents are tucked into every corner of the hotel. If the royal treatment is your preferred way to vacation, then the Windsor Court will make you feel like a king or a queen. Afternoon tea, spa treatments, and river views are all at your disposal, plus this pet-friendly property is perfect for your four-legged prince or princess. My personal favorite is Maison de la Luz. A luxury guesthouse, Maison de la Luz feels like you stumbled upon the best-kept secret in the city. Privacy is paramount, and you’ll enjoy it in every aspect of your stay from the strict guest-only policy complete with an honor bar to the private library with a hidden door that leads to Bar Marilou.

Discovery within driving distance. The Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama, feels like visiting a friend’s house: It’s comfortable, welcoming, and it will make you want to come back again and again. Golf and spa treatments are just two of the many reasons that The Grand is a destination not to be missed. The grounds are sprawling, the surrounding area is picture-perfect (a visit to downtown Fairhope is a must), and the view of Mobile Bay at sunset is nothing short of breathtaking. Jackson, Mississippi, is a quick escape for history and hiking trails and city life where I recommend staying at The Westin, and Bentonville, Arkansas, is perfect for an inspirational visit to the renowned Crystal Bridges Museum with an overnight at 21c Hotel.

St. Regis Bahia Beach, Puerto Rico

Idyllic island getaways. For those who are willing and able to travel by plane, my favorite destination is Puerto Rico, and I love to stay at the St. Regis. I often say that New Orleans has something for everyone, but I think Puerto Rico may have officially dethroned it. Puerto Rico is easy to get to and easy to navigate, it has a rainforest, white beaches, amazing cuisine, music and art culture, and top-notch cocktails. It can be family-friendly or romantic, packed with adventure, or all about rest and rejuvenation. Puerto Rico relies heavily on tourism, so it’s also a good option if you’re looking for a destination where your dollars can contribute to the local economies that need it the most. Also on my list are Fairmont Royal Pavilion in Porters, Barbados, or Amanyara in Turks and Caicos.

Planning ahead for travel. If you’re inclined to stay put a bit longer, keep in mind that it isn’t too early to begin planning your trip for 2022. Planning the bucket list trip can be a fun activity for the year.
